How important is discrete adjustment in aggregate fluctuations?

چکیده
Individual actions such as the purchase of a machine or the changing or a price are often discrete and infrequent. Macroeconomic models, however, often ignore this intermittent behavior. In this paper, we present conditions under which a representative agent model, which ignores discrete adjustment on the individual level, is observationally equivalent to a model that takes discrete adjustment into account. We also provide a mapping between the preference and technology parameters of the two models and present conditions under which this mapping is an identity.

Partial Adjustment Without Apology
Many kinds of economic behavior appear to be governed by discrete and occasional individual choices. Despite this, econometric partial adjustment models perform relatively well at the aggregate level. Analyzing the classic employment adjustment problem, we show how discrete and occasional microeconomic adjustment is well described by a new form of partial adjustment model that aggregates the ac...

Modeling price fluctuations in financial markets is very important. We try to model price fluctuations in Tehran stock exchange using heterogeneous agents’ model. We used agent-based computational approach. In this model, there are two kinds of agents, some agents have extrapolating expectations (chartists) and others have stabilizing or mean-reverting expectations (fundamentalists)...
متن کاملLocal Complementarities and Aggregate Fluctuations
Accumulating microeconomic evidence points both to firm level adjustment lumpiness and to the significant influence of idiosyncratic disturbances. Do these matter for aggregate fluctuations, or do their effects largely vanish upon aggregation? This paper explores the implications of local strategic complementarities and firmlevel adjustment lumpiness for aggregate fluctuations. It shows that sm...
متن کاملFactor adjustment costs: A structural investigation
This paper assesses various capital and labor adjustment costs functions estimating a general equilibrium framework with Bayesian methods using US aggregate data. The estimation finds that the adjustment costs are convex in both capital and labor and allowing for their joint interaction is important. The structural model enables us to identify the response of factor adjustment costs to exogenou...
متن کاملAdaptive aggregate production planning with fuzzy goal programming approach
Aggregate production planning (APP) determines the optimal production plan for the medium term planning horizon. The purpose of the APP is effective utilization of existing capacities through facing the fluctuations in demand. Recently, fuzzy approaches have been applied for APP focusing on vague nature of cost parameters. Considering the importance of coping with customer demand in different p...
